Some brides choose to go against the main fashion curve when it comes to their wedding. How so? They choose to back to very traditional wedding attire, decorations, procedures and ideals. So when it comes to a small item like wedding favors, are they traditional or are they a more modern installment of the wedding occasion?
Apparently the wedding favor has been around for quite some time, but the wedding favor has changed so much today that the meaning and item itself has evolved almost to an almost unrecognizable state. Originally, the wedding favor was given to quests of the wedding to show the wedded couple's appreciation for enjoy their special day and to further include the guests into the celebration. What were the wedding favors then?
Not necessarily specific to weddings, but used at all special gatherings and occasions was a gift given to the guests. Later the gifts were reserved for a wedding.. At first, the wedding favor contained a special edible treat within a crafted box, made from such elements as stone, porcelain, precious stones or metals. Really this wedding favor was two gifts in one. Slightly later in time the edible treats within the box evolved into being a count of five. Why five? The five edible treats were symbolic of the occasion's wishes for everyone, especially the wedded couple.
As a way to share the good wishes with their guests, the count of five returned a portion of the good wishes to the wedding guests - for longevity, health, fertility, wealth and happiness. The treats have evolved too. The favors for special occasions, started out as a special confection that has no specific design. Over time sugar-coated almonds became a tradition at weddings for the wedding favor treats. It is said that these are to represent both the sweet and the bitter moments throughout a married life.
As traditions have been passed from generation to generation, the traditions have changed slightly with each generation and the wedding favors have changed as well. Aside from the very traditional five confections or almonds, cookies and plantings have also been a traditional wedding favor it turns out. Cookies are extra special when it has been the wedded couple who made them together to give as gifts, showing true and deeper appreciation for those who shared their big day.
Plantings are not only traditional, but modern as well with more and more people interested in being "Earth-friendly". This makes a great way to mesh the two together. Try small plantings of herbs, flowers, vegetables or even young tree seedlings. These can not only make great wedding favors, but also a great addition to the wedding decor.
Use very simple planting containers such as wood or Terra-cotta for the plant bases to fit in with the traditional feel of the wedding. Remember, traditionally the wedding goes by before you realize it so be sure to take a moment to stop and smell the plantings!
